Why I Switched to Natural Fibers And What It Did to My Nervous System
You know how some people light up a room the moment they walk in? And others seem to quietly drain the energy from it without even trying? It’s not magic and it’s not just personality; it’s energy. And we all have a field of that we take with us everywhere we go.
When I started learning about energy fields and how everything around us carries its own frequency, something clicked unexpectedly for me. It wasn’t just about my thoughts, my words, or even the space I lived in. It was about what I was putting directly on my body, every single day.
Wait, our clothes have a frequency? Once I understood this, lightbulb moments were happening for me right and left.

Everything Has a Frequency Including What You Wear
When I started studying sound frequencies and the science of energy, one of the things that became clear very quickly is that everything in the physical world vibrates. Your thoughts, your words, the food you eat, the music you listen to, and the environment you live in are all in constant motion producing frequency. Think of it like this: everything is made of atoms, atoms are made of electrons, protons, and neutrons and they are in contstant motion.
And yes, the fabric you wear against your skin all day long!
Your body has its own bioelectric field. It’s real, it’s measurable, and it’s constantly interacting with everything around it, including the materials you dress it in. Natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk, and cashmere have a different energetic profile than synthetic materials like polyester, nylon, and fabrics with microplastics woven through them.
You may be thinking, Ok, so how does that affect me? So let me share with you what it actually felt like when I started paying attention.
Why I Started Making the Switch
About a year ago I started intentionally transitioning my wardrobe to natural fibers. Not all at once…that would have been overwhelming and expensive! But piece by piece, as things wore out or as I found pieces I loved, I started choosing 100% cotton, linen for the warmer months, and eventually added a cashmere sweater and wrap when I found a brand I loved at a price that made sense.
The motivation at first was the frequency piece. I was already doing the inner work, regulating my nervous system, being intentional about my home environment. It felt incongruent to spend all that energy on my inner and outer world while wrapping my body in materials that weren’t supporting the frequency I was working to maintain.
But what I noticed as I made the switch was more practical than I expected and it surprised me.
What I Noticed When I Switched to Natural Fibers
I’ll be honest with you. I thought this might be a subtle thing. Something I’d believe in but not necessarily feel.
Goodness, was I wrong!

My Body Runs Cooler and More Regulated
Natural fibers breathe with your body in a way synthetics simply don’t. Cotton and linen allow air to move through the fabric, which means your body can regulate its temperature naturally. Synthetic fabrics (especially those with microplastics) trap heat against the skin. I noticed this difference almost immediately. I run warmer in general and I had normalized a certain level of discomfort from my clothes. Once I switched, I realized how much energy my body had been spending just managing that.
My Skin Feels Ginuinely Different
Less itchy. Less reactive. Calmer. I hadn’t connected the dots before, but a lot of the skin sensitivity I experienced was coming from what I was wearing against it all day. Natural fibers are gentler, more breathable, and don’t contain the chemical treatments that synthetic fabrics often do. My skin has been noticeably happier since making this shift.
I Feel More Comfortable
This one surprised me most. I expected the frequency shift to be the big story. But the sheer physical comfort of natural fibers is its own kind of nervous system support. When you’re physically comfortable in your body, your nervous system has one less thing to manage. It sounds simple because it is. But simple doesn’t mean small.
Something Feels More Aligned
This one is harder to quantify but it’s real. When everything I’m doing is intentional, my thoughts, my environment, my practices, and now what I wear, there’s a coherence to it that I can feel. Like all the channels are pointing the same direction. That’s what the Regulate pillar of Rewire & Shine is really about. Not just what’s good for you in theory, but what brings your whole life into alignment with the frequency you’re working to maintain.
Natural Fibers and Your Nervous System

Beyond the frequency piece, there’s a straightforward nervous system case for natural fibers that’s worth understanding.
Your skin is your largest organ. It’s covered in sensory receptors that send constant information to your nervous system; temperature, texture, pressure, irritation. What you wear is providing input to your nervous system all day, every day, whether you’re conscious of it or not.
Synthetic fabrics can create low-level sensory friction. Not always enough to notice consciously, but enough to register. Natural fibers tend to create the opposite, a kind of sensory ease that supports rather than taxes your nervous system. Think of it as the wearable version of a regulated home. (You can read more about how your environment affects your nervous system in this post. What Is a Regulated Home? And How to Create One)
When you’re working on regulating your nervous system from the inside, through thought work, micro-resets, sound frequencies, it makes sense to support that work from the outside too. Including what you wrap your body in.
Where I Started and What I Recommend
If you’re thinking about making this shift, here’s my honest advice: don’t try to do it all at once. A full wardrobe overhaul is stressful, expensive, and counterproductive to everything we’re working toward here.
Instead, start with the pieces that are closest to your skin for the longest periods of time. Those have the most impact.
Start Here
- Everyday t-shirts and tops — 100% cotton is widely available and very affordable
- Sleepwear — you spend 7-8 hours in these, so this is high impact. Cotton or linen pajamas
- Underwear — 100% cotton, always
- Bedding — cotton or linen sheets and pillowcases
And Where You’re Ready
- Linen pieces for warmer months — tops, pants, dresses. Linen gets softer with every wash and is beautiful in the heat
- A cashmere layer, a sweater or wrap. Quince has made this accessible at a price point that doesn’t require a big commitment
- Cotton or linen blankets for your sofa and bed
I’ve put together a full collection of my favorite Quince natural fiber pieces, clothes and bedding, in one place if you want to browse. Shop My Natural Fiber Collection
What to Look For on Labels
- 100% cotton, 100% linen, 100% silk, 100% wool, 100% cashmere
- Avoid: polyester, nylon, acrylic, rayon, modal
- When in doubt, feel it. Natural fibers have a different hand feel, breathable, lived-in, real
This is the Regulate Pillar in Action
Everything at Rewire & Shine is built around three pillars: Rewire, Regulate, and Restore. Natural fibers sit squarely in the Regulate pillar, the body environment piece that most wellness content completely overlooks.
We talk a lot about what we think and how we breathe and what we eat. We talk less about what we wear. But if you’re spending 16 waking hours wrapped in materials that are working against your body’s natural regulation, the inner work is fighting an uphill battle.
Your clothes are not just an aesthetic choice. They’re an energetic one. And when you start treating them that way, something shifts.
I won’t go back. And I think once you feel the difference, you won’t either.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do clothes really have a frequency? Everything in the physical world vibrates at a frequency. This is basic physics, not just a wellness concept. Natural materials like cotton, linen, silk, and cashmere have a different energetic profile than synthetic fabrics, which are petroleum-based and often contain microplastics. Whether you approach this from a scientific angle or an energetic one, the practical difference in how natural fibers feel on the body is real and noticeable.
What are the benefits of wearing natural fiber clothing? Natural fibers breathe with your body rather than trapping heat against it, which supports natural temperature regulation. They create less sensory friction against the skin, are generally gentler on skin sensitivity, and don’t contain the chemical treatments common in synthetic fabrics. From a nervous system perspective, what you wear provides sensory input to your body all day, and natural fibers tend to create ease rather than low-level irritation.
Where do I start if I want to switch to natural fibers? Start with the pieces closest to your skin for the longest periods of time, everyday tops, underwear, sleepwear, and bedding. 100% cotton is the most accessible and affordable starting point. Linen is ideal for warmer months. Cashmere and quality linen pieces are worth adding when the budget allows. Quince makes both accessible without a huge investment.
Can natural fibers really affect your nervous system? Your skin is your largest organ, and it’s covered in sensory receptors that send constant information to your nervous system all day long. What you wear is contributing to that sensory input, whether you’re aware of it or not. Natural fibers tend to support sensory ease; they’re breathable, temperature-regulating, and gentle against the skin, which gives your nervous system one less thing to manage.
Is natural fiber clothing worth the extra cost? It doesn’t always cost more. 100% cotton basics are available at every price point. Where natural fibers do cost more, like cashmere or quality linen, the pieces tend to last significantly longer than synthetic alternatives, feel better on the body, and support your overall wellbeing in ways that add up over time. Starting small and building gradually makes the transition sustainable without overwhelming your budget.
What about microplastics in synthetic fabrics? Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon shed microplastic particles both when worn against the skin and when washed. Research into the full health implications of microplastic exposure is still developing, but reducing contact with synthetic fabrics is one of the most direct ways to lower your daily exposure. Switching to natural fibers where possible is a simple, practical step in that direction.
